The completion of such a transformational project in such a short time period.
How did you get people involved?
Some of our Adult Swims season ticket holders had seen what a difference the liner made over at Hunsonby that they wanted to pursue a grant from Cumbria Waste Management Environmental Trust. Recognising that the Swimming Pool Committee Chairperson had a full-time job, they took on the lion’s share of the project management.
What difference did the project make?
We now, to all intents and purposes, have a new pool: The liner has made it cleaner, warmer and much better looking. The skimmers at the deep end have had a colossal impact on the water clarity, since they remove the top layer of water that contains all the nasty stuff, including makeup and sun-tan lotion.
What do you wish you had known at the start?
If we had known how much of an impact it was going to make, it might have enabled us to be even more excited about the project! One of the ongoing issues is that if you have a pristine-looking pool, it quickly shows the dirt, so we have been drawing in additional volunteers to clean around the water line and brush out the finger-grips!
What do you hope for the future of your project?
We hope that local people will continue to have huge pride in their ‘new’ community resource, and many more people will volunteer to help clean it, staff it and keep it running smoothly in all successive summer seasons!
