We Could Be (Everyday) Heroes – a massive new creative commission inspired by David Bowie, investing in the West Cumbrian cultural sector
West Cumbria’s Creative People and Places project (We are Here!) to celebrate everyday acts of kindness with a £30k commission to produce an ambitious digital project across the region.
West Cumbria Creative People and Places are on the lookout for creatives and artists to apply for thirty-thousand-pound commission to help make celebrating kindness part of everyone’s every day across West Cumbria.
We Could be (Everyday) Heroes is intended to highlight and celebrate everyday acts of kindness, focusing in on things that may go unnoticed. These acts could be as simple as someone running down the street to hand back a toy fallen from a pram, a relative lending you a tenner or a stranger holding a door open for you. They could also be deeply profound acts of personal sacrifice. This is about celebrating the very best of our common humanity; something which starts with being kind to each other.
Sam Hunt (Co-Director) said “We are looking for local groups and artists to apply to deliver this digitally focused project that will be a constantly evolving map, recoding where these acts of kindness have taken place. With a select few being awarded a temporary memorial plaque establishing a new tradition for West Cumbria! This is about celebrating the incredible community spirit of West Cumbria and placing that at the heart of all we do.”
Kieran Sheehan (Co-Director) said “This is our first major project and is intended to set the tone of how we work and the kind of things we will be looking to support. Although this call out is open to everyone, we are particularly interested in hearing from creatives who live and work in Cumbria. The name is a little nod to the 55th anniversary of David Bowie’s 2 night stand at Rosehill Theatre Whitehaven when he was on tour with mime artist Lindsay Kemp!”
About Creative People and Places
Creative People and Places (CPP) is an Arts Council England programme that supports amazing activities like singing, street art, drawing, dancing and many other experiences in your hometown, village, library, beach, or kitchen!
Action with Communities in Cumbria (ACT) is the lead organisation for CPP in West Cumbria and following an appointment of two co-directors in March 2023, this local organisation has started an ambitious creative programme investing in the local cultural sector.
The programme will build on the already great work being done in West Cumbria, making sure that access to making, watching and being creative is something that everyone can be a part of.
