Energy Bill Relief Scheme and how it will affect your organisation

3rd October 2022

Announced on 21 September 2022, the 'Energy Bill Relief Scheme' will see energy prices cut for non-domestic energy customers, including charities and public sector organisations - helping to protect them from rising energy costs. The scheme will cover energy use for 6 months from 1 October 2022 to 31 March 2023, and is in addition to the Energy Price Guarantee for households.

Organisations do not need to take action or apply to the scheme to access the support. Support (in the form of a p/kWh discount) will automatically be applied to bills and the level of price reduction for each business will vary depending on their contract type and circumstances.

Government will publish a review into the operation of the scheme in three months to inform decisions on future support for the most vulnerable non-domestic customers after March 2023.

For further information on the details of the scheme, please see the Government press release and accompanying guidance.

Support from Utility Aid:

Utility Aid - specialist energy broker for the charity and not-for-profit sector - have produced an Update about the Energy Bill Relief Scheme and what they will be doing to support organisations.

Utility Aid's advice for Village and Community Halls is:

"Halls out of contract or due for renewal imminently need to sign into a fixed protected contract for at least 12-months, they will continue to receive Government Support and this will be shown on their bill as a discount and will most importantly give the hall and committee budget security.

"For Halls wanting to have budget security for a longer period we would recommend they align their contracts under a protected and fixed contract. During the course of this contract they will receive the opportunity to join the national charity tender, which will give the hall the opportunity to purchase as part of a collective for their future energy provision."
