Raise A Toast To Neighbourliness

14th June 2021

In celebration of Cumbria’s kind Communities, ACTion with Communities in Cumbria - the rural and community development charity for Cumbria - is hosting an online Midsummer community event on 24th June, 5pm-6.30pm. Jemma Metcalfe-Gibson, ACT’s Neighbourliness Works Project Officer says “We’ve all been affected in some way by the pandemic, and heartened by the community’s phenomenal response. Now we’d like to say a great big thank you to the kind folk of Cumbria for helping out their communities over the last 15 months”.

People from community groups across the county are all welcome to come along to talk about what they’ve been doing to help their neighbours. Ulverston Community Resilience Group and Brampton Acting Together will also talk about how they rallied round their communities during Covid and how they are going to continue supporting them in the future.

The event is free but booking is essential, not least because you’ll then receive a Kind Cumbria Cocktail (or Mocktail) recipe card, courtesy of Helen Askew AKA The Tipsy Filly. Helen has created this special cocktail so that you can bring your own homemade cocktail to the event and raise a toast to neighbourliness. She will also be coming to the event to demonstrate how it’s done professionally! At the end of the event, everyone will be invited to stand on their doorsteps, raise their glasses and toast their community. Cheers to that!

Jemma says “If people can’t make the event, they can always make the Kind Cumbria Cocktail and say cheers with their neighbours - on their doorstep or over the fence. Please send us your pictures of you and your cocktails!”

School children are also getting involved including Stramongate Primary School in Kendal. Carolyn Dalton, Reception Class Teacher at the school said “The children enjoyed taking part in Kind Cumbria Day last November and we’re only too pleased to be involved again this summer. On the 24th June the children will make fruit cocktails using different fruits to represent various elements of kindness and we will talk about all the different people who have worked so hard during the pandemic to help us all”.

Kind Cumbria is ACT’s social media campaign which promotes and celebrates kindness across the county. It culminates annually on 13th November.
