Issued 1 Dec 2015
Communities and business along the north Copeland coast from Distington to St Bees are being encouraged to have a say in an online survey on how to invest funding to support the coastal economy.
ACTion with communities in Cumbria and Kolek Consulting are assisting the North Copeland Coastal Communities Team to develop an Economic Plan, to be used to apply for Big Lottery Coastal Community funding.
The Coastal Communities national initiative aims to improve the economy in Coastal areas, and includes the stretch of coastline from Distington to the Sellafield boundary. The Economic Plan will be used to identify, establish and deliver projects which bring economic benefit to the North Copeland Coastal Community and will contribute to the overall growth in Copeland in future years.
Possible projects could include: improving access to sustainable services for locals and visitors using the coast; raising aspirations and supporting small scale business developments for locals and visitors associated with the coast; and improving the infrastructure of paths, parking and interpretation on the coast.
This consultation aims to gather views and suggestions from a range of stakeholders; residents or all ages, businesses, tourism service providers etc. to create a plan for an economically vibrant North Copeland area.
A number of events have already taken place in community locations this month to ask for people’s views and engage them in the consultation process. Anyone who was not able to attend one of these events can now participate in the online consultation, which is now open until 12.00 midnight on the 3rd January 2016. Fran Richardson at ACTion with Communities in Cumbria said “this is an exciting opportunity to make use of Copeland’s ruggedly beautiful coastline for long term, sustainable, economic gain. Working with the Coastal Communities team including Copeland Borough Council, Local Parish Councils and Community members we hope everyone will express a view and assist us to bring new funds to North Copeland.”
